Leather used in furniture making is typically referred to by the layer it is found on the hide. “Top grain” means exactly what it sounds like – it is taken from the outside layer of the hide. This type of leather is inherently more durable and each hide is as individual as a fingerprint. Aniline or semi-aniline refers to the method used to finish the leather. Aniline is the most natural form of leather, as it has no topcoat. Without a sealant, top grain leather is about 12–14% water, which allows it to acclimate quickly to your body temperature. The leather retains its ability to breathe and with time it takes on an attractive patina that only natural wear can provide. In addition, aniline leather is most highly valued for its luxurious softness and rich color, which is achieved through a traditional hand-dye technique. This preserves the natural surface and original characteristics of the hide, for the most authentic feel and texture.
The Nakasa leather furniture is made with the highest level of quality, construction and materials. With an in-house tannery, our craftspeople use time-honored techniques to hand-dye and finish the raw top grain cow hide leather imported from South America. Each furniture piece is constructed with a solid frame of oak wood or stainless steel. Features such as arm rests and legs are constructed from hardwood, iron or stainless steel. Every aspect of these pieces is hand built by skilled artisans, from the stitching to the studs.
